審査基準と競技カテゴリー

The Mid Japan BBQ Showdown is a KCBS-sanctioned Backyard Contest, judged under the official rules of the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Every entry is evaluated through blind judging, meaning the judges do not know which team submitted each plate. This keeps the competition fair and forces each entry to stand on the merits of the food alone. Two competition categories are contested at the inaugural event — Chicken and Pork Ribs — and each category is scored independently, so a team can win in one category while another team wins in the other. The team with the highest combined result is crowned Grand Champion and earns qualification to a corresponding championship event in the United States.
Scoring is based on three weighted criteria: Appearance, Taste, and Tenderness. Taste carries the greatest weight, reflecting the central role of flavor in barbecue, followed by Tenderness, which measures texture and doneness, and Appearance, which evaluates visual presentation of the entry. Judges trained and certified by KCBS assess each entry against a defined standard rather than against each other, so a single plate is judged on whether it meets the KCBS benchmark for that category. Turn-in windows are fixed per category: Chicken is collected first, followed by Pork Ribs, with teams responsible for submitting each entry within its allotted minutes. Entries submitted outside the window are not accepted, and the timeline is published in advance so teams can plan their cook.
The competition is open to pitmasters and teams from across Japan and beyond, from first-time competitors to experienced KCBS teams stepping onto a regional stage. Certified KCBS judges evaluate the entries, and anyone interested in judging can apply through the judge application process. Sponsors and partners who want to reach the barbecue community can support the event through the sponsorship program. By combining a clear, transparent judging standard with an accessible two-category format, the Mid Japan BBQ Showdown creates a recognizable, world-standard barbecue contest on Japanese soil, and gives every participant a fair, understandable path from the regional stage to an international championship.
